Der Logik kann ich nicht folgen. Warum spricht eine andere, eindeutige engl. Benennung der Pocken dagegen, eine Mehrdeutigkeit zu beseitigen?

Eine Optimierung oder Berichtigung, wie man will, müsste folgendermaßen aussehen:

In recent times, "the pox" used without any qualification probably referred to syphilis rather than smallpox (declared eradicated in 1980) which is usually referred to in full. "The French pox" or "the French disease" are terms of historical interest which could be included in the dictionary but should be marked as dated and possibly offensive.

I agree with eastwold #3 that the entry should be "the pox" and not just "pox" as in #4.

While you can say "he has smallpox", you would not say "he has pox" but rather "he has the pox".

With the current interest in monkeypox, however, once this disease has been named in full it may also be referred to simply as "the pox", although the context is then clear.
