Hm. Not sure if this is old fashioned of me. But:

When I write cf. I mean compare - in that case I would say "On the distinction", definitely not "For the distinction".

If my text alluded to the distinction but did not fully define it, I might write : "For the distinction... see...." (but would probably write "On the distinction" even then).

If I had defined the distinction but wanted to direct my reader to a source with a more comprehensive treatment I would write "For more on the distinction..., see...".
