... These results are consistent with Graham et al. (2009)’s broader study of hummingbird communities, which found that temperature, precipitation, and vegetation structure were important factors in structuring hummingbird community composition, and with Rodríguez-Gómez et al. (2021)’s study on the Azure-crowned Hummingbird (previously in the Amazilia genus, now Saucerottia cyanocephala), which found that both isolation and habitat differences played an important role in subspecies diversification. ...

     ... Abstract and Figures

The first of several nests (previously undescribed) of the Azure-crowned Hummingbird (Amazilia cyanocephala) was found on 20 February 2009 along the Río Pixquiac in Coatepec, Veracruz on the Gulf of Mexico side of the Sierra Madre Oriental of Mexico. The cup-shaped nest consisted of fibers and scales of tree ferns with the outside covered with liverworts and a few mosses and lichens. It was saddled on a thin, horizontal branch and had one "tail" of hanging liverworts, longer than the height of the nest cup, draped beneath the nest. It eventually contained two white, non-glossy eggs that were long-elliptical in shape, measuring roughly 13.5 × 7.5 mm. ...

The azure-crowned hummingbird (Saucerottia cyanocephala) is a species of hummingbird in the family Trochilidae. It is found in Belize, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, and Nicaragua. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist montane forest. The males have a metallic blue crown, while the females are identifiable by a more dull blue or greenish crown.[3] It forages on arthropods (often searching bark and clusters of pine needle) as well as nectar from flowers.[3] The species seems to be territorial based on how available resources are, and like most hummingbirds is likely polygamous.[3] Its nests are generally cup shaped used from local resources, but in an urban setting the species has been known to even use objects such as telephone wires in its construction.[4][5]

This species was formerly placed in the genus Amazilia. A molecular phylogenetic study published in 2014 found that the genus Amazilia was polyphyletic.[6] In the revised classification to create monophyletic genera, the azure-crowned hummingbird was moved to the resurrected genus Saucerottia.[7][8] ...
