Körperbau und Körperfunktionen
Das Braunbauch-Sandflughuhn erreicht eine Gesamtlänge von 31-33 cm, eine Flügelspannweite von 48-51 cm und ein Gewicht von 170-290 g bei den Hähnen und 140-240 g bei den Hennen. Damit ist es das kleinste der Flughühner mit aus den mittleren Schwanzfedern gebildeten, langen Schwanzspießen. Es unterscheidet sich von den anderen Flughuhn-Arten der westlichen Paläarktis durch seinen beim Hahn durchwegs dunkelbraunen, bei der Henne gebänderten Bauch. Das Braunbauch-Flughuhn oder auch Braunbauch-Sandflughuhn (Pterocles exustus) ist ein in Afrika bis Indien beheimatetes Flughuhn und gehört zu den Eigentlichen Flughühnern (Pterocles).[1][2]
Der Vogel hat ein weites Verbreitungsgebiet von Mauretanien im Westen über Sudan, Äthiopien, Somalia, Kenia und Tansania über die Südküste der arabischen Halbinsel bis Iran, Pakistan und Indien im Osten, nicht mehr in Bangladesch, Sri Lanka oder Myanmar.[3][4]
Der Lebensraum umfasst kahle Halbwüsten, gerne mit vereinzeltem dornigem Gebüsch oder Bäumen wie Akazien, auch Grasland, in Fruchtfolge bewirtschaftete Flächen und Buschland bis 1500 – 1700 m Höhe, gerne zusammen mit dem Schmuckflughuhn (Pterocles decoratus).[3][5]
Das Artepitheton kommt von lateinisch exurere ‚verbrennen‘.[6]
Merkmale
Die Art ist 28–33 cm groß, das Männchen wiegt zwischen 170 und 290, das Weibchen zwischen 140 und 240 g, die Flügelspannweite beträgt 48 bis 51 cm. Der Vogel ist somit relativ klein mit langen zentralen Schwanzfedern, dunkler Flügelunterseite und schwärzlicher Unterseite. Der Kopf ist schlicht gefiedert. ...

Chestnut-bellied Sandgrouse is distributed from Senegal in West Africa in a band across to Somalia, Egypt and around the Arabian Peninsula and into the Indian subcontinent. It is usually found in semi-desert areas where it feeds mainly on seeds. It feeds in the cool of the morning and evening while it tends to drink in the early morning.
