Nur diese eine Flughuhnart konnten wir während unseres Aufenthaltes im Fezzan beobachten. Am 4.1. flogen zwei Ind. nahe der großen Bewässerungsfelder im Wadi Berdjudj auf. An einer Wasserauffüllstation östlich vom Wadi Mathendous suchten am 5.1. 23 Ind. eifrig nach Nahrung. Hier fanden wir auch mehrere Rupfungen. Nach Auskunft ansässiger Beduinen soll ein südkoreanischer Urlauber mehrere Vögel erlegt haben. Schließlich überflogen östlich von Ghat am 10.1. 32 Kronenflughühner die dortige Sandwüste. Nach Cramp (1985) liegen unsere Nachweise im bekannten Verbreitungsgebiet....

Das Kronenflughuhn (Pterocles coronatus) ist ein in Nordafrika und im Mittleren Osten beheimatetes Flughuhn und gehört zu den Eigentlichen Flughühnern (Pterocles).[1][2]
Verbreitungskarte
Der Vogel ist in Nordafrika von Mauretanien bis Tschad und Libyen, in Zentralsudan, entlang des Roten Meeres bis Oman, Iran, Afghanistan und Pakistan beheimatet.[3]
Der Lebensraum umfasst Wüste und Halbwüsten einschließlich der heißesten und trockensten Regionen, bevorzugt steinige, kaum bewachsene gegenüber sandigen Böden in niedrigen Lagen, kommt aber auch in bergigen Lebensräumen vor.[3][4]
Das Artepitheton kommt von lateinisch corona ‚Krone‘.[5]

Die Art ist 25–30 cm groß und wiegt 240 bis 300 g, die Flügelspannweite liegt bei 52 bis 63 cm, somit für Flughühner mittelgroß, etwa wie das Tropfenflughuhn (Pterocles senegallus). Die zentralen Steuerfedern sind kurz, aber spitz. Die Unterseite ist ungebändert und ungefleckt. Im Fluge kontrastieren die dunklen Handschwingen mit den Flügeldecken. ...

The Crowned Sandgrouse is distributed in the Sahara Desert from Morocco to the Red Sea, in the Arabian Peninsula and in Iran, southern Afghanistan and Pakistan. It is a bird of the desert and semi-desert preferring stony desert to sandy desert.
The female, to the right in photo 1, is even more cryptically plumaged than the male as she does most of the daytime incubating. The male has a striking head pattern with a rufous crown patch and black vertical stripe down each side of the head.
They feed mainly on seeds and are gregarious in general. They are most easily seen when they visit a waterhole to drink in the early morning. ...

The crowned sandgrouse (Pterocles coronatus) is a species of bird in the sandgrouse family, the Pteroclidae from North Africa and the Middle East.
Description
A fairly small sandgrouse which appears rather uniformly coloured from a distance except for darker flight feathers, the wholly dark flight feathers being the best feature to identify crowned sandgrouse from the similar spotted sandgrouse. The dark flight feathers contrast with the sandy upper wing coverts and the creamy underwing coverts. The adult male has a black mask and lacks any grey tones on the neck and breast. The females and immatures lack the black mask and differ from spotted sandgrouse in having dark vermiculations, rather than spots, across the breast and all of the belly and not confined to the breast and upper belly as in spotted sandgrouse. They are 27–29 cm long and have a wingspan of 52–63 cm.[3]
