Das Bindenflughuhn (Pterocles indicus), oder auch Indisches Flughuhn, ist ein Flughuhn und gehört zu den Eigentlichen Flughühnern (Pterocles).[1][2]
Früher wurde die Art als konspezifisch mit dem Nachtflughuhn (Pterocles bicinctus) und dem Wellenflughuhn (Pterocles lichtensteinii) angesehen.[3]
Der Vogel kommt in Bangladesch, Indien außer Nordostindien und in Pakistan vor.[4][3]
Der Lebensraum umfasst kahle steinige, mit nur vereinzeltem Gebüsch oder Dornenbüschen bestandene Lebensräume, auch abgebrannte Flächen, vermeidet Küstenstreifen.[4][3]
Das Artepitheton bezieht sich auf Indien.[5]
Merkmale
Die Art ist 28 cm groß und wiegt zwischen 170 und 227 g. Sie ist wie Buschflughuhn (Pterocles quadricinctus), Nachtflughuhn (Pterocles bicinctus) und Wellenflughuhn (Pterocles lichtensteinii) relativ klein, rundschwänzig und in beiden Geschlechtern ausgedehnt auf der Unter- und Oberseite gebändert. Das Männchen hat eine schwarz-weiße Stirnzeichnung und unterscheidet sich vom sehr ähnlichen Buschflughuhn (Pterocles quadricinctus) durch eine charakteristische Zeichnung der Deckflügel, vom Nachtflughuhn (Pterocles bicinctus) durch ein kastanienbraunes, lohfarbenes Band im Brustband. ...

Taxonomy
The painted sandgrouse was formally described in 1789 by the German naturalist Johann Friedrich Gmelin in his revised and expanded edition of Carl Linnaeus's Systema Naturae. He placed it with all the other grouse-like birds in the genus Tetrao and coined the binomial name Tetrao indicus.[2] Gmelin based his description on "La gélinote des Indes" from the Coromandel Coast that had been described and illustrated in 1782 by the French naturalist Pierre Sonnerat.[3] The painted sandgrouse is now placed with 13 other species in genus Pterocles that was introduced in 1815 by the Dutch zoologist Coenraad Jacob Temminck.[4][5] The genus name combines the Ancient Greek pteron meaning "wing" with -klēs meaning "notable" or "splendid". The specific epithet indicus is Latin for "Indian".[6] The species is monotypic: no subspecies are recognised.[5]
