     ... Mauritius Blue Pigeon

Species type: Bird Species (Common name): Blue pigeon or Pigeon Hollandais (Dutch Pigeon)

    Scientific name: Alectroenas nitidissima

    Endemism: Endemic to Mauritius

    Conservation status: Extinct

Description: This very striking pigeon was at 30 cm long the largest of the six blue pigeon species. It had a white head and shoulders, a mainly blue body and a red tail. Males had red foreheads. The red, white and blue sequence was said to resemble the Dutch flag, hence the name “pigeon Hollandais”. It had fine white feathers around the neck that resembled a ruff. These could be raised and used for display. Its diet was probably mainly fruit, nuts, molluscs and other invertebrates. The Mauritius blue pigeon is believed to have became extinct in about 1830 due to the continued predation from introduced mammals and the increased rate of deforestation during this period. ...

     EX   Mauritius Blue-pigeon Alectroenas nitidissimus

... Distribution and population      Alectroenas nitidissimus is known only from three skins (Cheke 1987) and a number of descriptions and paintings (Tuijn 1969, Cheke 1987), from Mauritius (Cowles 1987). It was first described by Harmansz in 1602, and persisted for more than two centuries thereafter. Milbert, writing in 1812, noted that he ate many in 1801, and Desjardins reported in 1832 that birds were still found towards the centre of the island in the middle of those fine forests which by their remoteness, have escaped the devestating axe. The last specimen was collected in 1826, however, it seems to have persisted into the early 1830s (Cheke 1987).

Ecology      Very little is known, although it evidently inhabited the island's forests, although there is a curious reference provided by Desjardins to it living alone near riverbanks where it fed on fruit and freshwater molluscs.

Threats      Hunting and habitat loss presumably caused the species's extinction. ...

The Mauritius blue pigeon (Alectroenas nitidissimus) is an extinct species of blue pigeon formerly endemic to the Mascarene island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean east of Madagascar. It has two extinct relatives from the Mascarenes and three extant ones from other islands. It is the type species of the genus of blue pigeons, Alectroenas. It had white hackles around the head, neck and breast and blue plumage on the body, and it was red on the tail and the bare parts of the head. These colours were thought similar to those of the Dutch flag, a resemblance reflected in its French common name, Pigeon Hollandais. The juveniles may have been partially green. It was 30 cm (12 in) long and larger and more robust than any other blue pigeon species. It fed on fruits, nuts, and molluscs, and was once widespread in the forests of Mauritius.

The bird was first mentioned in the 17th century and was described several times thereafter, but very few accounts describe the behaviour of living specimens. The oldest record of the species is two sketches from a 1601–1603 ship's journal. Several stuffed specimens reached Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries, while only three stuffed specimens exist today. ...
