Identification Information 25 cm. Medium-sized, short-tailed, ground-dwelling dove. Male of nominate erythroptera mostly dark grey, with white throat, chest, forehead, and eyebrow. Reddish-purple upper back, scapulars and shoulders. Female dark grey with paler grey head, off-white forehead, eyebrow and face and rufous chest with paler feather edges. Male of race albicollis has entirely white head and neck. Voice Low moan.

This species is part of the family Columbidae, which diverged 32.7 million years ago, during the Paleogene period. This species has a very small population, which is fragmented to even smaller subpopulations on tiny wooded islets. It’s extinction from many of these islets indicates an overall decline, which is likely to be due to predation by introduced cats and rats, habitat loss and deterioration and natural disasters such as cyclones and severe storms. The Polynesian ground dove or Society Islands ground dove (Pampusana erythroptera) or Tutururu is a critically endangered species of bird in the family Columbidae. Originally endemic to the Society Islands and Tuamotus in French Polynesia, it has now been extirpated from most of its former range by habitat loss and predation by introduced species such as cats and rats, and the species is now endemic only in the Acteon islands. The total population is estimated to be around 100-120 birds.
It favors tropical forests, especially with Pandanus tectorius, Pisonia grandis and shrubs, but it has also been recorded from dense shrub growing below coconut palms.
A rat eradication campaign from 2015 to 2017 has allowed the ground dove to restablish itself on Tenarunga.

La Gallicolombe érythroptère (Pampusana erythroptera) est une espèce d'oiseaux appartenant à la famille des colombidés.
Description
Cet oiseau mesure environ 25 cm de longueur pour une masse de 150 g.
Le mâle ressemble beaucoup aux Gallicolombes de Jobi et de Kubary. Il a le front, les joues, la gorge et la poitrine blancs. La calotte, la nuque et le trait derrière chaque œil sont gris. Certains mâles peuvent avoir la tête entièrement blanche. Les parties supérieures sont gris olive foncé et pourpres. Des reflets rouge noisette marquent l'arrière du cou et les ailes. Le ventre est noirâtre. Les iris sont bruns, le bec noir et les pattes pourpre foncé.
La femelle est brun rougeâtre teinté de rouge pourpre sur la calotte, le cou et les couvertures alaires. Le dos et le croupion sont vert olive.
