Sorry, stupid me, that obviously should have been kleiner Papagei
All I've found so far on AE/BE is Wikipedia
, which says, 'Though budgerigars are often called parakeets
, especially in American English, this term refers to any of a number of small parrots with long flat tails.'
'Budgie' doesn't seem to be in LEO. I can't find a dictionary that actually marks it BE, but on the other hand, it's not even in M-W or AHD (only 'budgerigar'), which you would think it would be if it were widely used in AE.
I would be interested to know if any other AE speakers ever hear 'budgie' or even 'budgerigar' used in North America. I suspect the former is chiefly BE and the latter is chiefly formal/technical in AE.
