A "smoothbore gun" doesn't have to be a hand gun. For example, the M1 Abrams tank (as well as the German Leopard2 tank) has a "smoothbore gun", the German equivalent of which is "Glattrohrkanone". A "smoothbore gun" can also be an artillery piece ("Geschütz"), e.g. the majority of large guns used at the start of the American Civil War, with rifled guns being increasingly deployed later in that war.
