    If you are going to include "shot glass", I think it should be marked as an Americanism. I don't think I have ever heard it in England.

    Maybe I am just ignorant. I have a set of six very small glasses, and I have always called them schnaps glasses, and I drink schnaps out of them. When I drink whisky, I do so from a somewhat larger glass but that is rarely more than about a quarter full. This slightly larger one is what I learned to call a "shorts glass" when I worked in a pub about thirty years ago.

    I am not sure whether the term "shorts glass" is still in common use, but even if it is, it is definitely not the same as a schnaps glass. Just how small is a "shot glass"?

    One further thought: whenever I order schnaps in a German restaurant, and I do this as often as I can get away with it, it always comes in the kind of glass which I call a "brandy bowl", never in what I call a schnaps glass.

    I think it may be time for me to perform the drinking equivalent of eating humble pie. I have just done a bit of googling, studying images of various glasses in particular, and I have learned the following:

    A "shot glass" and a "Schnapsglas" are virtually indistinguishable, 2,3 or 4cl, or about 1oz(US). A "shorts glass" is substantially bigger, about 15cl or 4 to 5oz(US), but the actual phrase "shorts glass" does not seem to be widely used any more.

    I think I must therefore come around to supporting the original suggestion. Sorry if I have been wasting everyone's time. Although I have still not heard the expression used in England myself, I think beka27 and LK have persuaded me that I just don't move in the right circles!

    IMO Stamperl = ein Glas Schnaps. Das Glas ohne Schnaps drin ist ein Schnapsglas.

    Ein "shot" ist AFAIK eine Standardportion. Zumindest in EU-Gastronomie das, was in ein Glas fließt, wenn man das Glas an die Portionierungsvorrichtung (Spender) drückt. Meist ist "ein Einfacher" 2 cl (0,02 Liter), der Doppelte 4 cl.

    ... in US-Romanen bestellen üblere Gestalten gern mal "a Bud and a shot"; anscheinend ist dort teils üblich, Schnaps und Bier gemeinsam zu trinken?

    as i said above stamperl is shown as jigger - a word which i also know as a spirit measuring cup... sorry about this circumdescription...

    i would just stay that you can have a stamperl rum, ein stamperl schnaps - it really does not necessarily imply the content.

    Oh je, dann bin auch ich eine üble Gestalt, denn ich Norddeutschland ist es nicht ungewöhnlich, eine "lüttje Lage" oder "lütt un' lütt" (kleines Bier + Schnaps) zu bestellen. Es gibt auch den Brauch, ein kleines Schnapsglas in einem Bierglas zu versenken.

    @AMS: In US-Romanen hab ich das bisher immer nur bei den Bösewichtern erlebt.

    In Österreich ist das Bier-mit-Schnapsstamperl-drin, ist IMHO unter Schülern und jüngeren Studenten beliebt: Man versenkt ein Stamperl Schnaps im 0,5-Liter-Bierglas, das Ergebnis heißt dann "U-Boot".

    Andere Mixgetränke, die ich seit ca. meinem 20. Lebensjahr nicht mehr zu mir genommen habe - "Cola Rot", ein halber Liter Cola-mit-Rotwein-Gemisch. Beinahe so grausam wie "Diesel", also Bier mit Cola.

    Der norddeutsche Ausdruck ist, wenn mich nicht alles täuscht, PinNchen (eine Verhochdeutschung des niederdeutschen Pinneken u.Ä.). Pintchen habe ich noch nicht gehört oder gelesen. Wollte man Pinneken aufnehmen, zöge das andere Wörter wie Männeken (für Männchen) nach sich. Bin daher dafür das Wörterbuch auf Hochdeutsch mit Regionalismen zu beschränken und dialektale Ausdrücke nur in Ausnahmefällen aufzunehmen.

    Pintchen für Pinnchen ist schon deshalb ungünstig, da Pinte ja ein gastronomischer Begriff ist und eine Verwirrung die Folge wäre.

    yx hat recht: das Schnapsglas mit Schnaps drin ist ein Stamperl. Das Schnapsglas ohne Schnaps drin ist ein Stamperlglas. Sorry if it's confusing. Hicks.

    "Stamperl" ist auch lt. Duden die süddeutsche Variante (Verkleinerungsform) des hochdeutschen Wortes "Stamper" und das ist die Bezeichnung für das Behältnis (muss nicht unbedingt Glas sein). Es wird gleichzeitig auch für die Füllung und für das volle Behältnis verwendet (dann häufig mit Spezifikation des Inhalts), so wie jemand, der ein "Glaserl" zu sich nimmt ja auch nur den Inhalt schluckt. Falsch ist jedenfalls die Behauptung, nur ein Glas mit Schnaps sei ein "Stamperl"
