Es gibt für "by today's post" auch jede Menge Belege im Internet. Man muss halt unter "erweiterter Suche" angeben, dass Google auf englischsprachigen Seiten suchen soll. Dann bekommt man auch nicht als erstes die ganzen Wörterbucheinträge:

Bei näherer Betrachtung handelt es sich in erster Linie um Belege, in denen es um "posts" geht, die im Internet gepostet wurden.

Andererseits kann ich mir auch keinen Zusammenhang ausmalen, in dem ich auf einer Website "mit heutiger Post" schreiben würde. Was würde ich denn auf einer Website damit sagen wollen? "Mit heutiger Post... blablabla" ist doch etwas, was ich in einem Brief oder einer E-Mail verwende. Daher ist das Internet in diesem Fall vermutlich eh kein besonders geeigneter Ort zum Suchen von Belegen.

Es ist nicht sehr sinnvoll, auf englischsprachigen Seiten zu suchen, denn da sind auch alle möglichen (ggf. schlecht) übersetzten Seiten bzw. in nicht-englischsprachigen Ländern verfassten Seiten auf Englisch dabei. Und wenn man mit site:co.uk sucht, um diese Seiten größtenteils auszuschließen, bekommt man gerade einmal sechs Treffer, die in die Richtung der Beispiele von Jalapeno gehen.

Ich werde bei nächster Gelegenheit meinen muttersprachlichen Kollegen fragen, was er von der Formulierung "by today's post" in der in LEO stehenden Bedeutung hält, und das dann hier "posten"...

Auf site:co insgesamt finden sich einige Treffer, die die Uebersetzung zu belegen scheinen. Allerdings sollte man nicht verheimlichen, dass es sich insgesamt gerade mal um 11 Treffer handelt.

Andererseits: "by today's post" ist nicht gerade eine auf Webseite sehr haeufig verwendete Formulierung. Auch fuer den deutschen Begriff "mit heutiger Post" finden sich gerade mal 66 Treffer.

Das Websters dictionary bietet die selbe Uebersetzung an und man sollte doch hoffen, dass ein englisches Woerterbuch zumindest die englische Seite richtig hat. :)

Auch wenn das jetzt nicht gerade ein "qualifizierter Beleg" ist: vor einigen Wochen war ich auf Geschäftsbesuch in Southampton, und ich bin mir ziemlich sicher, dass da der Geschäftsführer seine Sekretärin irgendwann am Vormittag mal fragte, ob sie denn "...already picked up today's post..." hätte.

Wie gesagt: ich weiß, seriöse Belege sehen anders aus; aber angesichts des Mangels an Belegen in diesem Fall ist diese Info ja vielleicht als "Indiz" nicht ganz wertlos.

The question here seems to be more whether this is still really a frequent collocation even in BE. To my ears, it sounds more characteristic of Mausling's first two examples (19th and 18th centuries; and maybe also the third?).

It's really the countable version of the word. You almost have to picture one post today (a set time when the post coach arrived and left the village?), another one tomorrow, etc. In contrast, the modern sense of 'the post' (AE 'the mail') is uncountable, a general word for a process whose details, including the number and time of pickups and deliveries, are often unimportant.

The same would be true of something like 'the first post' or 'the morning post,' when there were actually several mail deliveries each day at very specific times. (A luxury that seems unimaginable nowadays, at least in AE; post offices here are increasingly struggling just to maintain home delivery at all, and new neighborhoods are often forced to build communal mailboxes at a central location, like apartments, rather than having a carrier come to each house.)

It seems to me that the word is still countable (answering the question 'Which post/mail?') when it has the meaning '(a particular) postal delivery,' but it's no longer normally countable when you're talking about sending rather than receiving.

Nowadays, for something you send, my sense is that people would normally just say 'I'll put it in the mail today' rather than 'I'll send it by today's mail.' Not that you couldn't conceivably say the latter, but I doubt that it's at all common.

For something you receive, though, 'It came in today's mail' is still extremely common; we also often say 'It came in the mail today,' but probably a bit less often.

My sense is that 'by' now is usually used more for the type or method of delivery: 'Will you send it by regular post/mail, or by FedEx or UPS?'

So, if BE is like AE on these points, would it be better then to write a couple of examples or phrases without the word 'by,' like 'I'll put it in the post/mail today,' or just 'in today's post/mail'?

If it's more complicated than that, maybe BE speakers can take it from here. (-:

I finally had the occasion to ask my native speaker colleague. He said that "by today's post" is not wrong, but that he would not use it. He'd rather say "We've sent xyz to you by post/mail today" etc.

I therefore stand corrected as far as my suggestion to delete the entry is concerned...
