The problem is more with the noun. Clearly an oblong can be a rectangle, but it can also be a more oval shape, too, so another translation would be helpful, although I don't think the curremnt one is wrong.

I'm not sure where anyone gets 'oval' from in this context. I would not agree that an oblong can be an oval shape.

I do agree that 'rectangle' is the usual word in mathematics, and that it can suggest sharper, more exact corners, but even a generally rectangular shape with rounded corners still isn't by any stretch of the imagination an oval, is it?

To my ears the main differences are that 'oblong' is somewhat less typically mathematical language (but still somewhat formal), that it's used much more often as an adjective than as a noun, and that it suggests a rectangle placed lengthwise, that is, lying on its longest side.

Sorry, I keep trying to think how to put this: Could we say that a rectangle is more a mathematically defined shape, whereas an oblong is more a visually defined shape, a generally rectangular shape on its side?

Speaking for myself, the only reason I've described an oblong as a "rectangular oval" and a rectangle which is "more oval" is that the word used to describe a rectangle with rounded corners is "oblong" :-) Maybe the "American native speakers" simply said it had rounded corners and Marcus took that to mean it was oval?

Darf kurz aus der Praxis etwas einflechten: als wir in Kanada einen ovalen Tisch sowie einen rechteckigen Tisch gekauft hatten, war ich auf der Suche nach den richtigen Tischdecken: die rechteckigen hießen übereinstimmend "oblong" (und hatten keine abgerundeten Ecken), die ovalen waren "oval" table cloths (und zwar bei den verschiedensten Herstellern, auch amerikanischen.) Das mag zwar nicht so überzeugend sein wie ein Lexikoneintrag, zeigt aber den Alltagsgebrauch.

Die Bezeichnung "oblong" für ein Rechteck ist meines Wissens kein mathematischer Fachbegriff. Die von Schnapsbrenner genannten Quellen beziehen sich auf den Begriff "oblong numbers" - falls diese auf deutsch "Rechteckzahlen" heißen (ich weiß es nicht), wäre ein entsprechender Eintrag sinnvoller als die allgemeine Gleichsetzung oblong = Rechteck.

Ich wollte keinesfalls den Vorschlag "Rechteck" unterstuetzen. Ich sah nur das Woertchen (optional) bei dem Korrekturvorschlag nicht.

Als Übersetzung für 'Rechteck' kann im mathematischen Zusammenhang ganz klar nur 'rectangle' in Frage kommen.
Sieht man sich die Definition von 'oblong' an, dann stellt man fest, dass damit nur Rechtecke erfasst werden, bei denen anliegende Seiten nicht gleich lang sind, d.h. ein Quadrat kann nicht 'oblong' sein. Ein Quadrat ist aber ein Rechteck.
Daraus folgt, dass die Menge der 'oblongs' nur eine Teilmenge der 'rectangles' ist!
