Especially common in woodland humus, found to over 10 inches deep in the soil. Densities have been measured at over 90,000 specimens per square meter in a German forest (Krauss and Funke, 1999). May feed on fungi. 4-8 Families (3-5 in North America), 500 Species (20 in North America)

Protura, or
proturans, are an order of hexapods previously treated as insects, and sometimes treated as a class [2]. They are very small (<2 mm long) soil-dwelling animals and are unique among arthropods for showing anamorphic development, whereby body segments are added during moults [3]. A total of around 500 species have been described worldwide, in four to eight families [1], making Protura the smallest class in the phylum Arthropoda [4].<br/>

http://animaldiversity.ummz.umich.edu/site/ac...Proturans are minute, slender inhabitants of litter, soil, and logs. Though common and widely distributed, they are seldom noticed because of their size and secretive habits. Little is known about their ecology.

The
Proturans (20 NA spp) are poorly known. They are less than 2.5 mm long, bristly, and lack antennae and eyes. Their forelegs project forward and function as antennae. They occur in humus and rotting vegetation. Three families (Eosentomidae, Protentomidae, Acerentomidae) occur in North America, and representatives of all may occur in Minnesota.
