Would 'Moment mal' be more casual? And the exclamation points are probably not necessary, at least in English.

As people use 'hold on' also to address unacquainted adults 'warten sie mal' should be okay, no?
'Moment mal' matches one dictionary example: 'Hold on! This isn’t the right road.' 'Einen Moment' should work for the others.
The dictionaries seem to like the exclamation mark, though...

Ich sehe den Berliner Klempner förmlich vor mir, den man nach einer Dichtung fragt, woraufhin er in seinem Lager verschwindet mit den Worten: "Warten se ma..." ;-)

@CJ #4: Das sehe ich anders. Siezen u. Duzen hat nicht zwangsläufig mit der Sprachebene zu tun. Es wird durchaus auch im saloppen, umgangssprachlichen Kontext das Siezen beibehalten (Man denke an das klassische "Sie Arschloch!";-). Die von oreg angesprochen Handwerker (zumal, wenn sie ins Haus kommen) sind ein gutes Beispiel.

Actually, it can be in there, at least in 'hang on,' which is partly why I suggested it. It can sound a little annoyed -- for example, when you're trying to slow someone down, as in 'Just hold your horses/Don't get carried away there/Don't rush off without me/Wait a minute and let's be sure this is right,' or when you're trying to put the brakes on something they've said, like 'Now just a minute there, isn't that a bit unfair/exaggerated/one-sided?'

To me 'hold on' is mostly only for literally asking someone to wait a moment, as in talking on the phone or serving a customer in a store. And/or maybe somewhat more BE; I don't really say it much myself.

I use 'Hang on' for both literally waiting and figuratively slowing down, but mainly in a pretty casual context. That matches the dictionaries that mark it as 'informal,' which seems right to me. There are several degrees more polite, from 'Just a minute' (more all-purpose -- it's the one I would say could feel either like 'Sie' or 'du') to 'Just a moment' (more secretarial/respectful).

Maybe it would help if other English speakers would weigh in on this one.

@hm: I think we all agree that 'hold on' is informal. The disagreement is about the German side, whether every sentence with "sie" is automatically polite. I don't think 'warten sie mal' is significantly more polite than 'warte mal', other than du/sie marking the social distance between the people involved.

It would depend on which of the two a person was in the habit of using,they have equal weight. But, hang on a cotton-picken' minute,either is used sometimes in a discussion,when one of the speakers disputes or challenges something the other has said. In which case its meaning comes closer to 'hold it right there'and is followed by the point the speaker wishes to make.
